Overlanding... in a pickup truck?

I keep thinking about this: how bad of an idea would it be to overland in something, like, say, a Toyota Tacoma? From the bit of reading I’ve been doing, full-sized pickup trucks seem a bit big for the task, but a smaller sized pickup truck, like an old Toyota, might fair a bit better.

My wife saw a beater of a Dodge Dakota for sale, and was encouraging me to get it, but I’d rather spend a bit more and get something in better condition that I could potentially use for overlanding as well. The advantage of using a truck is that it would totally come in handy next time we have to move. I’m not sure I’d be able to swing buying a 4-runner or a Land Rover or anything of the sort, as it wouldn’t be quite as practical when it comes to moving day.

Thoughts?

You could try to hold out for a short box first gen 4x4 (‘79-83) except they’re pretty pricy even in “okay” condition. You should consider a first gen 4 Runner for the same or less money. Removable hardtop, yo. Take that off and take out the rear seats, BOOM, pickup.

I think a Dakota or similar with a cap would be a good candidate. I’ve actually started thinking of this too as I’d like to do some travelling this summer. My F150 is ok but it’s getting tired.

Taco’s make good overlanding rigs, I’ve seen plenty guys use them.

The taco is THE choice for overlanding, so long as you aren’t carrying too much weight. Check out expedition overland or some of my videos on O&E, Tacoma is the biz.

FS trucks aren’t really well suited to overlanding because they aren’t really well suited to the size of trails you find many places. Truck tastes may be getting larger but the trails aren’t.

FYI the Tacoma holds its value insanely well, if you want a good deal on a capable truck, check out the frontier. Solid hardware and much more affordable. if you get a pro 4x model you get the skids and locker you want, but even this base model with aftermarket skids and no locker fared pretty well with good tires.

That’s good to know about the Frontier. And yeah, from what I’ve seen, the Toyota trucks hold value quite well. Although I did just come across this little guy, which could be decent: http://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/…

Interesting. I’ll have to do some more reading about the 4-Runner.

I think the truck is a great idea, just not a Dodge. You can do a lot better without trying.

That’s awesome.

I wish I could find the link - there were some guys that drove a Volkswagen Golf from the US down to the bottom of south America and blogged about it. That's got to be quite the trip.

I think the asking price on the Dodge was $800. But the sign that Mrs. BaconSandwich wanted me to get it - that's got to count for something. I linked to another little Toyota in one of the comments - something like that could be fun.

The trouble with pickups is that you have to be able to get from your house to wherever you’re camping the first night in a day of driving. Because it’s a major bitch unloading all the shit out of your bed into a hotel room for a night. I have a ‘97 Tahoe. I go pretty hard and get pretty serious in the thing. I highly recommend it. You can get the best one in the world for under 5 grand.

That is a steal I can’t lie. But if it checks out and runs sell if could be perfect. Even better if you plan to upgrade anything that’s broken anyway!
